What Is It?
Zoom is presented as a series of scenarios that take place in an airline company and is designed to allow a group to practice team behaviors by working on a real problem.
The team's challenge is the one faced by employees of an airline at a gate when they are all working together trying to clear a plane for departure. It is your standard travel nightmare, in which there are different sorts of travel delays. The team's goal is to get the plane out safely, on time, and with as many passengers and suitcases as possible. Each team member is asked to take a role and perform the responsibilities associated with that role: Fuel Manager, Food Service Manager, Maintenance Manager, Baggage Manager, Passenger Manager, and Station Manager.
The airplane is sitting at the gate, awaiting passengers from incoming planes, the departure time
has been posted, and the airport is reporting heavy fog conditions. As the team receives updates
on weather conditions and incoming flights, they must work together to get the airplane off the
ground.
After the simulation is complete, the facilitator will guide the teams back through the experience,
uncovering their focus on the task at hand rather than the process they used to work together.
Team members begin to recognize the potential pitfalls they will have in working together and
appreciate how difficult it is to become a high performing organization.
